About the honey

Is your honey 100% pure? And how do I spot adulterated honey?

Yes. All the honey we sell is 100% pure Greek honey, with nothing mixed in: no syrups, no sugar, no honey from other countries. Genuine honey usually crystallises over time, has a full aroma and doesn’t dissolve at once in cold water. If you have a question about a jar, ask us and we’ll tell you where it comes from.

My honey crystallised. Has it gone bad?

No. Crystallisation is a natural process in honey and doesn’t affect its quality. To make it runny again, warm the jar gently in lukewarm water (below 40°C).

What is raw honey? Is your honey raw?

Raw honey is honey that has not been heated or pasteurised after the harvest. Our own Beesclepious honey is raw and unfiltered: we never heat it, and we pack it in small batches, so it keeps its natural texture, aroma and pollen. For the other brands we stock, the details on their own label apply.

Can I bring honey on a plane from Greece?

In checked luggage there’s no limit. In cabin baggage honey counts as a liquid, so the 100 ml-per-container rule applies within the EU. For gifts, larger jars travel safely in checked luggage, and we wrap them protectively.

Which honey goes best with tea, yoghurt or cheese?

For tea and yoghurt, choose a soft, aromatic honey such as thyme, orange blossom or sage. With aged or blue cheeses, the darker and more bitter honeys work best: chestnut, arbutus or oak. Pine and fir honey, which are less sweet, go well with nuts and bread. (Honey is not for infants under one year old.)

How do I store honey, and how long does it last?

In a cool, dark place with the lid firmly closed, not the fridge, which speeds up crystallisation. Honey doesn’t spoil: it keeps for years. Use a dry spoon so no moisture gets in.

Which variety of Greek honey should I choose?

Thyme is the most famous, aromatic and refined; pine is less sweet, with notes of wood and resin; fir (“vanilla”) is delicate and rare, ideal as a gift. Our Honey Guide breaks down each variety in detail.

Where does your honey come from?

All our honey is 100% Greek. We produce our own and work with nomadic beekeepers who move their hives with the seasons: thyme on Mount Kithaironas, in Mani and on Crete; fir and oak in mountainous Corinthia; pine in central Euboea; heather and arbutus in autumn.
